Dr. Sarah Selmer has been an associate professor of mathematics education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at West Virginia University for over eight years. Following earning her undergraduate degree in finance at the University of Oregon, Dr. Selmer was a Peace Corps Volunteer in the country of Mauritania. After her service in the Peace Corps, she pursued a Masters in Teaching from Oregon State University and was licensed to teach high school mathematics and computer science in the state of Oregon. She taught in a high school setting for nine years prior to moving to West Virginia to pursue her doctorate in curriculum and instruction.

Dr. Sarah Selmer’s teaching interests focus on the development of elementary and middle grade mathematics teachers. Her research interests include elementary teachers’ noticing and sense-making of students’ mathematical thinking, the relationship between teachers’ and curricular materials, and teacher learning in the context of providing students integrated mathematics and science classroom experiences.
