Dr. Carver grew up on a small farm in north central rural Illinois and attended Princeton High School. Upon graduation he attended Illinois State University to study chemistry. He has 20 years of experience in the educational field. He started his career as a high school teacher of chemistry, physics and physical science in rural Illinois towns of Sycamore followed by Minooka. His career then took a shift to teach chemistry and physics at Illinois Valley Community College in north central Illinois. After twelve years, and a completed Masters and Doctorate, he pursued a career in Science Teacher Education at West Virginia University where he is currently employed. His research interests focus on the improvement of teaching and learning in the STEM disciplines at all levels (p-20), particularly in ways that help students connect science to daily living. Current project include a Nanotechnology research program for teachers, a Solar Panel installation and study at a local high school, and looking for novel ways to improve large lecture chemistry and physics courses. Dr. Carver is the director of STEM Education Initiatives at the College of Education and Human Services.
